Description
The European Commission’s DG RTD and DG CNECT jointly invite you to the technical launch event of the EOSC EU Node online on 10 October 2024 at 9.30 - 13.15 CEST.
The event will be live-streamed and recorded for the public audience. You can join the livestream by clicking here.
Supporting the EU’s Policy of Open Science, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to give the EU a global lead in research data management and ensure that scientists in Europe enjoy the full benefits of data-driven science.
To foster the development of EOSC, the European Commission has deployed into production the EOSC EU Node in the form of managed services provided by third-party contractors. In particular, the procured EOSC EU Node offers the following value propositions:
- Facilitates the creation of the “Web of FAIR data and interoperable services” under the Open Science Policy.
- Puts a “seed in the ground” for the development of the EOSC Federation by putting into operation the first recognised EOSC Node at the European level for the initial 3 years of service duration.
- Offers core services for scientific research infrastructures to federate (such as: single-sign-on, resource catalogues and knowledge graph, application workflow management, monitoring, accounting, helpdesk) and common horizontal services for end-users to benefit from (such as: virtual machines, a cloud container platform, bulk data transfer, interactive notebooks, file sync and share, and large file transfer).
- Defines a pathway and blueprint (i.e., EOSC Architecture and Interoperability Framework) for other potential EOSC Node operators to join the federation.
The online launch event will focus on a technical demonstration of the EOSC EU Node, provided by the contractors at first hand, who are also responsible for the operations, maintenance and support of the services.
A panel on the buildup of the EOSC Federation will reflect on the importance of this milestone, its impact on the future development of EOSC, on the buildup of the EOSC Federation and on the broader adoption of Open Science principles. The moderated panel discussion will feature representatives from the EOSC Association and its Board of Directors, EOSC Steering Board, the European Commission, the contractors providing the EOSC EU Node and the research community.
The EOSC EU Node has an open concept and is only the first node of the federation. National, regional and/or thematic service providers as well as autonomous EOSC Nodes can connect to the federation via established interoperability frameworks and policies.
EOSC is also recognised as the Common European data space for research and innovation as part of the European Strategy for Data. A panel discussion on Data Spaces will feature representatives of the data spaces developed in parallel with EOSC and highlight some of the potential synergies between these data spaces also facilitated by the Simpl (Smart Middleware) initiative of the European Commission.
