The EOSC EU Node Prepares for the Next Phase: Adapting to the upcoming EOSC Federation policies and sustainable services

The Next Phase of the EOSC EU Node. Adapting to upcoming EOSC Federation policies and sustainable services.

The EOSC EU Node is entering into a new phase as it adapts to the emerging community policies and frameworks of the EOSC Federation. As part of this transition, services and training materials previously onboarded to what was previously known as the “EOSC Marketplace” through the former EOSC Future project will be deprecated from the EOSC EU Node’s Resource Hub to ensure compliance with the revised EOSC Federation processes currently under development.

This evolution marks a significant step toward building a sustainable, interoperable, and trustworthy research ecosystem that supports Europe’s researchers and innovators. By preparing for the upcoming EOSC Federation policies, the EOSC EU Node is laying the groundwork for a more coherent and collaborative European Open Science Cloud.

Key Changes Include

Services: All legacy services previously onboarded in the previously known “EOSC Marketplace” are to be removed from the Resource Hub of the EOSC EU Node, as we are also refraining from using the term “EOSC Marketplace” at this stage of the EOSC ecosystem’s development.

  • Service Onboarding into the EOSC Federation: Service onboarding into the EOSC Federation will be enabled in the near future via established Nodes of the EOSC Federation. Once the first set of Nodes become enrolled into the early federation (along with the EOSC EU Node), service providers will be able to choose their preferred Node for onboarding, while ensuring their services remain discoverable across the entire federation regardless of their chosen onboarding location.
  • Service Onboarding to the EOSC EU Node: Early service onboarding to the EOSC EU Node is currently available only for services provisioned by the candidate Nodes participating in the Build up phase. General onboarding for other service providers will be enabled when onboarding in the EOSC Federation is available via multiple nodes.

Training Materials: All legacy training materials are to be removed from the Resource Hub of the EOSC EU Node. Only training materials for the EOSC EU Node and its services will be retained.

Moving on, training material will be onboarded in the EOSC EU Node in the following cases:

  • Co-developed by service providers for services onboarded to the EOSC EU Node.
  • Contributed by other EOSC Nodes and directly related to their services in the Federation.
  • Cover general Open Science topics that are approved by the EOSC EU Node.
Next Steps

This step marks the beginning of a new phase for the EOSC EU Node. While some legacy services and materials will be removed, this transition also creates a clear and open pathway for service providers and training authors to align with the updated federation framework and participate in a sustainable and interoperable EOSC.

The EOSC EU Node team will:

  • Individually contact all legacy service providers and training authors who provided their explicit consent during the migration process in early 2024 to inform them about the next steps.
  • Provide information on how to align with the updated onboarding requirements to the EOSC Federation and the EOSC EU Node, expected to be finalised later this year.
  • Offer support materials and resources to help service providers and authors prepare their services and materials for re-onboarding under the new federation framework.

We deeply appreciate the valuable contributions made by all service providers and training authors, and we look forward to working closely with you to build a dynamic, sustainable, and federated research environment.
