Empowering the EOSC Federation Through Open-Source Software

Empowering the EOSC Federation EOSC EU Node Open-Source Software

The EOSC EU Node (EEN) is built entirely upon open-source software, ensuring transparency, and reusability at every level. This means that anyone can access the software used to provision the EEN’s platform and services, reuse and modify it for their own projects according to their respective open-source licenses.

The newly released open-source code covers the main EEN components, including the User Space, Resource Catalogue, and Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructure (AAI), among others.

Why open-source matters

Making the EOSC EU Node software open source – primarily the elements newly developed for the purpose of the services but also pre-existing components – reflects the European Commission’s commitment to open standards and public access to digital tools. Beyond policy alignment, this approach strengthens the EOSC Federation by providing all future EU Nodes with the technical foundation, or “blueprint”, needed to set up their own infrastructures.

By reusing and adapting code, both newly developed and pre-existing, Nodes can significantly reduce their development time and costs, while maintaining compatibility with the EOSC ecosystem.

Who benefits

The release of the EOSC EU Node’s open-source software components brings value to a range of stakeholders across the European research and innovation landscape:

  • Developers can study, extend, and contribute to the EEN components to build interoperable tools and services both within and outside of the EOSC ecosystem.
  • Organisations can use the EOSC EU Node as a reference model to accelerate the creation and deployment of their own EU Nodes.
  • Researchers and service providers can benefit from increased interoperability and a more cohesive European Open Science environment.

All core EOSC EU Node components are available under open-source licences. The public repository includes documentation for each software module, all of which you can access here.

By making this software publicly available, the EOSC EU Node sets the stage for a more connected, sustainable, and innovative European Open Science ecosystem.
